How to Write a Poem

Updated: Jun 5, 2023

I am sure if you're a poetry lover, you probably have thought "I should write some" and then scraped the idea thinking "I don't know how", well it's time to make it a reality.

So without wasting time, let's write a poem.

# Decide on your topic or theme

There are a billion topics and themes to write about. It doesn't have to be elite or super popular. All that matters is that the topic is important to you. If it's about a person it should come easily if you're close to them and care about them. If it's about a certain theme, it comes naturally if you're really passionate about the subject. If you don't feel about something that way feel free to pick a prompt that you can just search online.

# Decide how you want to start

The first line should be gripping. Decide if you want to write in the first person or do you want it to be told as a story. Also, decide if you want it to be a certain type of poetry. If it's your first poem it's not necessary but there are a lot of types of poetry if you want to choose from.

# The Flow

Go with the flow and it's you that decides the next line. Think about where you want to end the poem and how you will get there. If you are writing to a certain rhyme scheme and need rhyme words, you search for them online or feel free to break them. Depends on you.

# The Ending

The final line should feel satisfying to you. If you're not satisfied, keep writing. If the poem doesn't end on a meaningful note it doesn't impact the reader. After you read it whole the first time, see if there is a need for edits. Feel free to change lines and even swap them around.

- Remember the first time you write it won't be the greatest. You'll get better the more you write. You need to accept not every poem might be good but remember the more you write the more goodness will start appearing in your poems.

Write your poems and send them to me

I would like to dedicate this post to my dear friend who got inspired by me and taught me that I am an aspiring person.

I would also like to dedicate this post to the person who couldn't write a single poem.

Keep Writing...
