How We Fall Apart by Katie Zhao Book Review

Summary

Nancy Luo was shocked to learn that Jamie Luan, Sinclair Prep's best junior and former best friend, disappeared and was later found dead. She was even more shocked when rumors spread that she and her friends Krystal, Akil, and Alexander were the prime suspects, thanks to the "Proctor," who anonymously convicted Nancy through her school's social media apps.

They were all once Jamie's best friends, and she knew their deepest, darkest secrets and they were buried with her. Well, somehow the director knows them too. The four must unearth the true culprit before they unearth more than Proctor can handle and cost them more than they can afford, including Nancy's full scholarship. Nancy soon begins to suspect that her friends also have secrets she knows nothing about.

Elite preparatory students must deal with their own secrets when they are revealed but how far the "Proctor" will go...

Positives

  • Strong characters with well-written backstories and great aspects.

  • Realistic dialogues and eloquent scenes.

  • Brilliant build-up till the climax and it keeps you hooked.

  • The dark side and the pressures of academics were confronted.

  • Interesting character dynamics that are amusing to read.

Negatives

  • Though the build-up to the climax was amazing, the climax itself let me down. It felt too surreal and it felt like it came out of nowhere.

  • The romantic plot line between the friends (Nancy and Alexander) was necessary and was not needed.
