Sands of Arawiya Duology Review - We Hunt the Flame and We Free the Stars by Hafsah Faizal

The Sands of Arawiya series by Hafsah Faizal tells the story of two warriors who are compelled by duty and bound by fate. It is based on Arabian magical folklore. The Hunter, Zafira braves the Arz's cursed forest to feed her people. Nasir is known as the Prince of Death because he kills people who challenge his tyrannical father, the sultan. She needs to hide who she is. He cannot show compassion.


But when Zafira and Nasir set out on a quest to find a magical artifact that has been lost, they run into an ancient evil that was thought to have died out long ago. They also learn that the prize they want maybe even more dangerous than their enemies.

In order to feed her people in the cursed Arz forest, Zafira, the Hunter, disguises herself as a man. Nasir, the Prince of Death, kills those who dare to defy his tyrannical sultan father. In the event that Zafira was uncovered as a young lady, every last bit of her accomplishments would be dismissed; His father would punish Nasir in the harshest way possible if he showed compassion. In the kingdom of Arawiya, both Nasir and Zafira are myths, but neither of them wants to be.

Nasir is sent by the sultan on a similar mission when Zafira sets out to find a lost artifact that can stop the Arz and restore magic to her suffering world. recover the ancient rarity and kill the Tracker. However, as their journey progresses, an ancient evil arises, and the prize they seek may pose a greater threat than either of them can imagine.

The war on Sharr has ended. The gloomy forest has vanished. Despite Altair's captivity, Zafira, Nasir, and Kifah are bound for Sultan's Keep, determined to carry out his plan: reestablishing the hearts of the Sisters of Old to the minarets of every caliphate, lastly restoring wizardry to all of Arawiya. However, they lack both allies and resources, and the kingdom is filled with fear of the Lion of the Night's return.


Nasir fights to control the magic in his blood as the zumra plot to eliminate the greatest threat to the kingdom. He must learn to transform his power into a weapon that he can use against both the Lion and his father, who is enslaved by the Lion. Through her relationship with the Jawarat, Zafira fights a very different darkness that is growing inside of her. This darkness is filled with voices and hums, pushing her to the edge of chaos she can't let go of. Nasir and Zafira fall in love despite the ever-increasing darkness surrounding them; however, their time is running out to achieve their goals, and if the order is to be restored, significant sacrifices will need to be made.
