The ABC Murders by Agatha Christie - Book Review

Updated: May 4, 2023

My first Agatha Christie Book Review. If you don't know about this amazing author whose works have sold more than 2 billion copies, let me introduce you to this great soul.

Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Mallowan, ( September 15, 1890 - January 12, 1976) was an English writer widely known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, mostly centered around the popular fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. She has also written the world's longest-running play, the murder mystery - The Mousetrap, which has been running in London since 1952. As an author of the "Golden Age of Detective Fiction," Christie has been nicknamed the "Queen of Crime." She also wrote six novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. In 1971 she was made a Dame (DBE) by Queen Elizabeth II for her services to literature. The Guinness Book of Records lists Christie as the best-selling writer of all time.

Now, to the book review...

INTRODUCTION

When Alice Asher is murdered in Andover, Hercule Poirot is already following the clues. Alphabetically, it's one letter down, and twenty-five to go.

There is a serial killer on the loose. His macabre calling card is the ABC Railway Guide, which he leaves next to the bodies of his victims. But if A stands for Alice Asher, slain in Andover, and B for Betty Bernard, strangled with her belt on Bexhill beach, who will victim C be? And more importantly, why is this happening?

POSITIVES

  • A cleverly constructed mystery that keeps you on your toes. The ending feels well-planned out, it doesn't feel that it came out of no-where

  • The characters feel natural and realistic. The cast of the characters is interesting and you won't have any who to even suspect.

  • The scenario is fascinating, normally murderers try to cover up their tracks but in this one, our serial killer just challenges Hercule Poirot (big mistake) to catch if he can.

NEGATIVES

  • The plot sometimes just feels that it is building up to nowhere so it feels tedious sometimes but it actually pays off in the end. Trust me.

PERSONAL OPINION

One of Christie's best works. Read it, it's amazing.

⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 stars / ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
